Best low-shedding dogs for Singapore (and the hypoallergenic myth)

Low-shedding breeds keep the fur off your sofa, and all of these are HDB-approved. But no dog is truly hypoallergenic, and low shedding means more grooming, not less. Here is the honest list.

4 min read

If you are house-proud, allergy-prone, or simply tired of a coat's worth of fur on the sofa, a low-shedding dog is a sensible choice in Singapore, where a heavy shedder drops hair year-round rather than in seasonal bursts. One honest thing first, though: no dog is truly hypoallergenic. Allergies are usually a reaction to dander and saliva, not just hair, so a low-shedding coat reduces the trigger without removing it. Spend time with the breed before you commit if allergies are the reason.

What makes a coat low-shedding

The low-shedding breeds tend to have hair that grows continuously, like ours, rather than a coat that sheds out on a cycle. That means less fur around the home, but more grooming: these coats mat and need regular brushing and professional trims, which matters more in Singapore's humidity. You are trading vacuuming for grooming, not escaping maintenance altogether.

The best low-shedding breeds for Singapore

All of these are HDB-approved and shed very little.

Bichon Frise

A cheerful, powder-puff companion with a curly coat that barely sheds. It needs frequent brushing and regular grooming to stay mat-free, but the payoff is one of the lowest-shedding dogs going, and a genuinely sociable temperament.

Toy Poodle

The poodle's tight, curly coat is the gold standard for low shedding, and its intelligence makes it highly trainable. Expect a professional trim every four to six weeks; the coat is the maintenance.

Maltese

A long, silky, single coat that sheds minimally. It tangles easily, so many owners keep it in a shorter puppy cut, which is practical in the heat and cuts the daily brushing.

Cavapoo

The Cavalier-Poodle cross usually inherits a low-shedding wavy coat with a softer, gentler temperament than a straight poodle. Coat type varies with the cross, so meet the parents if shedding is your priority. Weighing it against a similar cross? See Maltipoo and our Cavapoo vs Maltipoo comparison.

Miniature Schnauzer

A wiry double coat that sheds little when hand-stripped or clipped regularly. Sturdier and more terrier-spirited than the toy breeds, it suits an owner who wants low shedding without a lapdog.

Havanese and Coton de Tuléar

Two gentle, people-loving companions with soft, low-shedding coats. Both need committed daily brushing to stay mat-free, but neither will carpet your flat in fur.

What this does not fix

Low shedding is not no maintenance and not allergy-proof. These coats demand regular grooming, and a severe allergy may still flare. If a family member has allergies, arrange to spend real time with the specific dog first. And whatever the coat, all of these still need training, exercise and the usual commitment.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best low-shedding dog for an HDB flat?

The Bichon Frise, Toy Poodle, Maltese and poodle crosses like the Cavapoo are among the best: all are HDB-approved and shed very little. Each needs regular grooming to manage the coat.

Are any dogs truly hypoallergenic?

No. No breed is completely hypoallergenic, because allergies react to dander and saliva as well as hair. Low-shedding breeds reduce the trigger but do not remove it, so spend time with the dog first if allergies are a concern.

Do low-shedding dogs need less grooming?

The opposite, usually. Low-shedding coats grow continuously and mat easily, so they need frequent brushing and professional trims, especially in Singapore's humidity.
