Thinking about adopting a Maltipoo?
A Maltipoo can do a convincing impression of a mop head or a teddy bear, depending on the day, the humidity, and whether it's been anywhere near a puddle.
Can a Maltipoo live in an HDB flat?
PotentiallyConfirm this individual dog with HDB
This cross-breed name does not establish the parent varieties or permission for an individual dog. Our source evidence is unresolved. Get written confirmation from HDB before committing; do not rely on a seller’s label, small size or this directory’s older approval flag.
HDB sets and maintains the approved-breed list. Check the current rules at HDB.gov.sg →

Plan activity around your dog, not a timer
A breed score cannot tell you how many minutes are safe today. Avoid hot conditions, watch your dog's breathing, and agree an activity plan with your vet.

This guide covers coat maintenance, daily routines and questions to ask about health. Costs and behaviour vary; the figures and scores are starting points for planning, not guarantees.
Is a Maltipoo HDB approved?
A cross-breed label does not establish permission to keep an individual dog in an HDB flat. Parent varieties matter, and small size alone is not approval. Our evidence for this individual-cross question remains unresolved. Ask HDB for written confirmation before committing, rather than relying on a seller or this directory’s older flag. Project ADORE is a separate partner-led route for eligible local mixed-breed rescues.
Ask which Poodle variety is in the parentage and take the documents to HDB. Toy and Miniature Poodles appear on the named list; that alone does not settle permission for this individual cross.
Personality and temperament
Meet the individual dog more than once where possible. Ask how they respond to handling, visitors, children and other dogs. Our editorial scores do not guarantee an easy first dog or a particular temperament.
Energy is rated 3 out of 5, moderate, which suits both the climate and a flat.
Barking and difficulty being alone have several possible causes. Do not diagnose separation anxiety from a breed label. Build comfortable short absences gradually and seek veterinary or qualified behavioural help if your dog is distressed.
Exercise in Singapore's climate
The heat score is an editorial comparison, not a measured safe temperature or evidence that this cross tolerates heat better or worse than either parent. Coat, health, activity and the conditions all matter.
Plan activity around the individual dog and actual temperature, humidity and ground conditions. Early or late hours are not automatically safe, and a score on this page cannot prescribe a safe duration. If you suspect heatstroke, stop activity, move somewhere cool, start cooling with water while keeping it away from the nose and mouth, and contact a vet promptly. Continue cooling during transport where possible. See PDSA’s first-aid guidance.
Ask your groomer and vet about a comfortable coat-care plan. Clipping does not make hot-weather exercise safe.
Fill the rest indoors with short training games and puzzle feeders. At 4 out of 5 trainability this is a dog that enjoys learning, and mental work is also the most useful thing you can do about the barking.
Coat and grooming in the humidity
Grooming needs are rated 5 out of 5, the top of the scale, at about S$1,600 a year, with shedding rated 2 out of 5. That is the trade, and on a cross it comes with an extra uncertainty: coat type varies considerably between litters and even between siblings, depending on which parent the individual puppy takes after. A wavier, more Poodle-like coat mats more readily than a straighter one.
Whatever you get, comb to the skin two or three times a week at minimum, and daily if the coat is on the curlier side. Behind the ears, under the collar, in the armpits and around the back end. A soft coat mats from the base outward, so the surface tells you nothing, and a matted coat in this humidity holds moisture against skin. Itchy skin and allergies are both on this page's health-issue list, and that is how most of it starts.
Book a groom every four to six weeks and keep the dog in a short practical trim year round.
Two more jobs. Dry the dog thoroughly to the skin after every bath and every wet walk. And check the ears weekly: drop ears with hair in the canal in 82% humidity is the standing recipe for the ear infections on this page's list.
Low shedding does not mean allergen-free. No dog breed is truly hypoallergenic, and a brief visit with a puppy cannot guarantee that an allergic person will tolerate living with them. Discuss the household’s needs with an allergy specialist. See AAAAI’s pet-allergy guidance.
Diet and feeding
Food runs about S$1,000 a year. At 3 to 8 kg, precision beats product: a couple of stray treats is a meaningful share of the daily allowance, and patellar luxation leads this page's health-issue list, where weight goes straight through the knees.
Weigh the food, count treats inside the daily total, and use the dog's own kibble as training currency. Ask your vet to body-condition score at each visit, since a coated dog hides weight gain well.
Gut health is on this page's list, so keep the diet consistent rather than switching for novelty, and introduce any change gradually over a week or more. Toy-sized puppies can also drop their blood sugar between widely spaced meals, so feed little and often while young and take your vet's guidance on the interval.
Dental health is listed too. A small crowded jaw over a twelve to fifteen year life needs daily brushing.
Training
A willing dog at 4 out of 5, and the priorities are unusually clear because the health list points straight at them:
- Comfort with time alone. Begin at a duration your dog can manage calmly and increase gradually. If they show distress, reduce the challenge and seek qualified help rather than making them endure it.
- A harness, never a collar. Collapsed trachea is on the health list, and lead pressure on a small dog's windpipe is the avoidable version of that problem.
- Grooming tolerance, from week ten. Combing several times a week and a groomer every four to six weeks for fifteen years. Make handling ordinary while the dog is tiny.
- Comfortable movement. Ask your vet about a limp, skipping gait or reluctance to jump. A breed label cannot identify the cause. Use stable, non-slip access where your dog needs it.
Health
There is no kennel club screening scheme for a Maltipoo, because it is not a breed. No governing body publishes recommended tests for it and no Breed Watch category applies. What you can and should demand are the two parent breeds' schemes, applied to the actual parents of your actual puppy.
For the Maltese, the UK Kennel Club recommends eye testing using the BVA/KC/ISDS Eye Scheme, and offers no breed-specific DNA package. The Maltese sits in Breed Watch Category 1.
For the Toy Poodle, the recommendations are a DNA test for progressive retinal atrophy (prcd-PRA), eye testing using the BVA/KC/ISDS Eye Scheme, and hip testing using the BVA/KC Hip Dysplasia Scheme. The Toy Poodle is also in Breed Watch Category 1.
So the ask is concrete: eye certificates for both parents, the prcd-PRA result from the Poodle side, and hip results. Add a written veterinary patella assessment for both parents, since patellar luxation leads this page's own list and no scheme covers it here.
Ask a vet to interpret the actual parents’ screening results. A test addresses the variant it tests for; it does not rule out every cause of progressive retinal atrophy or guarantee a healthy puppy.
The rest of this page's list, eye conditions, dental health, ear infections, allergies, itchy skin, separation anxiety, collapsed trachea and gut health, is mostly managed by routine rather than screened for, and the routines are in the sections above.
Ask for current routine-care quotes and discuss preventive care with your vet. If considering insurance, compare exclusions and waiting periods before choosing a policy; cover and eligibility vary.
Housing and space in Singapore
HDB permits one dog of an approved breed and up to two cats per flat. Private premises may keep up to three cats or dogs in combination, subject to the applicable rules. Check the current AVS licence-fee table before paying: sterilisation status, age and the number of pets affect the fee and available duration. A one-time licence is distinct from a three-year licence. Housing permission and an animal licence are separate requirements.
A flat suits this dog well on space. Runners on polished tile where it turns and stops, steps up to any furniture it is allowed on, and a cool place to lie out of the afternoon sun.
The housing question that actually matters for this breed is not the floor plan, it is the schedule. Before you commit, work out honestly who is home during the day and what happens when that changes.
Care and cost in Singapore
The amounts in this page’s calculator are planning assumptions, not verified provider quotes or a prediction of this dog’s medical bills. Request current itemised quotes for food, grooming and veterinary care. Add acquisition or adoption costs, training, licensing and an emergency reserve separately. Compare insurance exclusions, waiting periods and limits against your own circumstances. Build an adjustable budget.
Getting a Maltipoo: buying and adoption
Ask for the AVS dog farm licence number, then for the parent screening documents named above by name, and read them. Ask which Poodle size was used, both because of the HDB wording and because it drives adult size.
Ask what both parents' coats feel like, since coat type is the least predictable thing about this cross and it sets your grooming bill and your drying routine.
Be sceptical of anything sold on being unusually tiny. "Teacup" is not a recognised size, and deliberately undersized dogs bring more fragility, more dental crowding and more anaesthetic risk. You would be paying a premium for the problem.
Check the current rescue directory and discuss the individual dog’s history, needs and housing eligibility with the rescue. We have not verified that any named organisation currently has this cross, or why previous owners surrendered particular dogs. Ask an authorised partner directly about Project ADORE.
Life stages: puppy to senior
Puppy, to about 12 months. Practise being alone from the first week, in minutes, before you ever need it. Feed little and often while very young. Start combing daily from week ten while there is barely any coat, plus daily tooth brushing and weekly ear checks. Fit a harness. Keep the puppy lean and get insurance in force early.
Adolescent, roughly 9 to 18 months. The adult coat comes in and grooming demand rises sharply, exactly when owners are tempted to let it slide. Watch for a skip or hop behind, and for any honking cough on excitement or lead pressure. Separation problems, if they are coming, usually show here.
Adult, roughly 2 to 9 years. Steady and easy: coat short, teeth daily, ears weekly, weight held, walks in the cool hours, company most days.
Senior care. Agree review frequency with your vet as your dog ages. Changes in movement, appetite or breathing need assessment, rather than a diagnosis from a breed guide. Adapt grooming, rest and activity to comfort; breathing difficulty or collapse needs urgent help.

Frequently asked questions
Is a Maltipoo HDB-approved in Singapore?
This cross-breed name does not establish the parent varieties or permission for an individual dog. Our source evidence is unresolved. Get written confirmation from HDB before committing; do not rely on a seller’s label, small size or this directory’s older approval flag.
Do Maltipoos bark a lot?
Our current barking assessment is: has a moderate bark (editorial estimate). It has not been independently validated. Ask about this dog's observed behaviour, triggers and time alone; the breed label cannot predict your neighbour's experience.
How much grooming does a Maltipoo need?
Our current grooming assessment is: needs a lot of grooming, including regular professional trims (editorial estimate). Confirm the individual coat-care routine and any professional grooming with the rescue, groomer or vet. The score is not a measured frequency or price.
How does a Maltipoo cope with Singapore's heat?
An editorial heat score cannot establish a safe temperature or walk duration for an individual dog. Activity, humidity, health, age and body shape matter. Avoid hot conditions, provide shade and water, and ask your vet about an appropriate activity plan.
Is a Maltipoo a good breed for a first-time owner?
Our household-fit note is: Editorial: may suit. This is not a validated prediction. Assess the individual dog, your daily capacity, training support and known care needs before deciding.
How much does a Maltipoo cost to keep in Singapore?
The stored planning assumption is S$3,700 a year for food, grooming and routine veterinary care. It is not a verified typical cost for this breed. Replace it with current quotes and your own usage; add setup, licensing, insurance if chosen, boarding and emergency savings separately.
