The Cavapoo is the deliberate cross between a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Miniature or Toy Poodle, developed from the 1990s onwards, initially in the United States and most popularised in Australia, where the spelling "Cavoodle" sticks. The intent was a small, low-shedding, family-friendly companion that kept the Cavalier's affectionate temperament and softened the coat into something more teddy-bear-ish.

A Cavapoo can be an affectionate companion, but a cross does not guarantee a particular coat, temperament or housing eligibility. Meet the individual dog, ask about both parents and make room for the care needs described below.

It is a cross, not a standardised breed. No kennel club maintains a Cavapoo standard and no registry holds a central health database for it, so outcomes vary between litters and between generations. An F1 is a straight Cavalier by Poodle cross; an F1b is bred back to a Poodle. Everything below, including the numbers on this page, describes a typical range.

Personality and temperament

Temperament varies between individuals. Look for a dog whose observed behaviour suits your household, and use reward-based training and gradual introductions. A designer-cross label does not guarantee easier behaviour.

No breed or cross is reliably safe with toddlers. Supervise interactions, prevent rough handling and give the dog a retreat children cannot follow into. Barking scores are editorial comparisons, not a prediction of how an individual dog will behave.

The honest counterweight is attachment. The Cavalier inheritance makes this cross clingier than the average small dog. A Cavapoo expects to be in the same room as its people most of the time, and a household routinely empty from 9am to 7pm is one this dog will struggle with. Separation anxiety appears on this page's own health-issue flags for the breed, which is unusual and deliberate.

Arrange company and appropriate care around your dog’s needs. Gradual training can help with comfortable time alone, but distress deserves veterinary or qualified behavioural support. Daycare is not suitable for every dog.

Exercise in Singapore's climate

This page rates heat tolerance at 2 out of 5. The coat is dense, often double-textured in the F1 generation, and humidity sits inside it. On top of the coat, the Cavalier parent contributes its own heat sensitivity, so this cross gets the problem from two directions at once. Singapore's daily maximum runs 31 to 33 degrees Celsius with average relative humidity around 82% year-round (Meteorological Service Singapore), so this is the everyday condition rather than a hot-day exception.

Plan activity around the individual dog and actual temperature, humidity and ground conditions. Early or late hours are not automatically safe, and a score on this page cannot prescribe a safe duration. If you suspect heatstroke, stop activity, move somewhere cool, start cooling with water while keeping it away from the nose and mouth, and contact a vet promptly. Continue cooling during transport where possible. See PDSA’s first-aid guidance.

Adjust exercise and enrichment to age, health and recovery. Familiar sniffing, suitable play and short training sessions can all contribute; two walks do not automatically meet every dog’s needs.

Coat and grooming in the humidity

Ask a groomer to assess the actual coat and agree a brushing and clipping routine. Check gently for tangles, especially in friction areas, and seek help before mats become painful. Costs and appointment intervals vary.

Matting varies with the individual coat and home maintenance. Ask a groomer to show you how to check for tangles without pulling the skin. A shorter welfare clip may be kinder than prolonged painful detangling.

Use a slicker brush and a comb that reaches all the way to the skin rather than skating over the top of the coat, which is the most common home-grooming mistake and the reason owners are surprised by mats they thought they had brushed out. Drop ears over a curly coat also need weekly checks and a proper dry-out after any bath or rain; ear infections are on this page's health-issue list.

Diet and feeding

Food sits at S$70 to S$100 a month on a quality small-breed diet. Set the portion with your vet against your dog's actual weight and activity, not a breed average, which matters for a cross whose adult weight ranges from 5 kg to 11 kg on this page alone.

Keep kibble sealed and out of direct heat, because a humid Singapore kitchen spoils dry food and attracts pests faster than a drier one, and do not leave a bowl standing all day. Fresh water at all times, refilled more often than a food label suggests, since a dog panting in this humidity loses more fluid than one in a temperate climate.

Weight discipline earns more here than in most breeds, for a specific reason. A Cavapoo carrying extra weight is loading knees already flagged for patellar luxation and a heart that may be carrying inherited risk from the Cavalier side. Gut health also appears on this page's health-issue flags for the breed, so introduce any food change gradually over a week or more rather than switching in a day.

Training

Use short, reward-based training sessions and adjust to the individual dog. Being a designer cross does not guarantee a particular learning speed or behaviour.

Spend the early months on the things that are hard to add later:

Socialise deliberately through adolescence rather than assuming a friendly puppy stays friendly. The soft temperament that makes this cross lovely also means a bad experience lands harder, so keep introductions calm and positive.

Health

This is the section that should shape your buying decision, and the concerns come predominantly from the Cavalier side.

Start with the hybrid-vigour question, because it is usually raised in the sales conversation. A 2024 Royal Veterinary College study compared three popular Poodle-cross designer breeds, the Cavapoo among them, against their purebred parent breeds across 57 health conditions in over 9,000 dogs, and found no consistent health advantage for the crossbreeds. Most comparisons showed no meaningful difference, and the crossbreeds showed higher odds of a condition about as often as they showed lower odds. Crossing does not cancel the Cavalier's inherited risks.

On the Cavalier side, the UK Kennel Club lists as good practice before breeding a DNA test for curly coat and dry eye (CC/DE), a DNA test for episodic falling (EF), and heart screening for mitral valve disease using the Kennel Club heart scheme for Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, with eye testing under the BVA/KC/ISDS Eye Scheme as best practice on top. It also notes a collaborative syringomyelia screening initiative run with the breed and the British Veterinary Association, and places the Cavalier in Breed Watch Category 2.

Two of those deserve plain language:

On the Poodle side, the Kennel Club's recommendations for the Toy Poodle include a DNA test for progressive retinal atrophy (prcd-PRA) as good practice plus eye and hip testing, and for the Miniature Poodle a DNA test for osteochondrodysplasia as well. Patellar luxation is the other Poodle-side contribution most owners meet.

Discuss heart and neurological concerns with your vet, including what monitoring or referral fits your dog. A murmur needs veterinary assessment; this page cannot prescribe the same imaging schedule for every dog. Ask about costs and insurance terms before making decisions.

Housing and space in Singapore

A cross-breed label does not establish permission to keep an individual dog in an HDB flat. Parent varieties matter, and small size alone is not approval. Our evidence for this individual-cross question remains unresolved. Ask HDB for written confirmation before committing, rather than relying on a seller or this directory’s older flag. Project ADORE is a separate partner-led route for eligible local mixed-breed rescues.

HDB permits one dog of an approved breed and up to two cats per flat. Private premises may keep up to three cats or dogs in combination, subject to the applicable rules. Check the current AVS licence-fee table before paying: sterilisation status, age and the number of pets affect the fee and available duration. A one-time licence is distinct from a three-year licence. Housing permission and an animal licence are separate requirements.

Inside the flat, the two things that matter are a cool place to rest through the afternoon and company. This breed asks less of your floor area than of your calendar.

Care and cost in Singapore

The amounts in this page’s calculator are planning assumptions, not verified provider quotes or a prediction of this dog’s medical bills. Request current itemised quotes for food, grooming and veterinary care. Add acquisition or adoption costs, training, licensing and an emergency reserve separately. Compare insurance exclusions, waiting periods and limits against your own circumstances. Build an adjustable budget.

Getting a Cavapoo: buying and adoption

The breeder conversation matters more for designer crosses than for pedigree breeds, because there is no kennel club to enforce a minimum standard. Insist on the breeder's AVS dog farm licence number, cardiac screening on the Cavalier parent, syringomyelia MRI screening where the line has any history, hip and patella screening on both parents, eye certification from a board-certified ophthalmologist, and a written 24-month health guarantee that explicitly covers cardiac conditions. Ask which generation the litter is and which size of Poodle sits behind it, since that decides the adult size and coat you will live with.

A breeder unwilling to share the Cavalier parent's cardiology paperwork is a breeder to walk away from. That is the one line in this guide worth treating as absolute.

Check the current rescue directory and discuss the individual dog’s history, needs and housing eligibility with the rescue. We have not verified that any named organisation currently has this cross, or why previous owners surrendered particular dogs. Ask an authorised partner directly about Project ADORE.

What to skip: any Cavapoo advertised on the basis of "rare colours" or "teacup" sizing, any breeder whose Cavalier parents have not been cardiac-screened, and any informal import from Malaysia or Indonesia. The price gap on imports rarely covers the screening that has been skipped.

Life stages: puppy to senior

Puppy, to about 12 months. Time alone and grooming tolerance are the two jobs, and both are much harder to install later. Get the puppy used to the salon before the coat needs real work. Socialise deliberately. Ask your vet to listen to the heart at every puppy visit so you have a baseline rather than a first impression at five.

Adolescent, roughly 9 to 18 months. The puppy coat changes to the adult coat, matting gets abruptly worse, and this is where most owners fall behind and end up with a shave-down. Increase brushing rather than resigning yourself to the clippers. Attachment behaviours can also intensify here, so keep practising short separations rather than letting the habit set.

Adult, roughly 2 to 8 years. The settled years, and the right ones for discipline: a stable weight, annual cardiac auscultation, weekly ear checks, teeth brushed, insurance in force. If a murmur is ever heard, take the echocardiogram conversation seriously and early. Early-stage MVD is a condition to manage over years, not an emergency, and it is managed far better when it is found early.

As your dog ages, agree review frequency with your vet and adapt routines to comfort and mobility. New coughing or reduced stamina warrants veterinary advice. Breathing difficulty, collapse or distress needs urgent help, not a wait until later in the week.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Cavapoo HDB-approved in Singapore?

This cross-breed name does not establish the parent varieties or permission for an individual dog. Our source evidence is unresolved. Get written confirmation from HDB before committing; do not rely on a seller’s label, small size or this directory’s older approval flag.

Do Cavapoos bark a lot?

Our current barking assessment is: is fairly quiet (editorial estimate). It has not been independently validated. Ask about this dog's observed behaviour, triggers and time alone; the breed label cannot predict your neighbour's experience.

How much grooming does a Cavapoo need?

Our current grooming assessment is: needs a lot of grooming, including regular professional trims (editorial estimate). Confirm the individual coat-care routine and any professional grooming with the rescue, groomer or vet. The score is not a measured frequency or price.

How does a Cavapoo cope with Singapore's heat?

An editorial heat score cannot establish a safe temperature or walk duration for an individual dog. Activity, humidity, health, age and body shape matter. Avoid hot conditions, provide shade and water, and ask your vet about an appropriate activity plan.

Is a Cavapoo a good breed for a first-time owner?

Our household-fit note is: Editorial: may suit. This is not a validated prediction. Assess the individual dog, your daily capacity, training support and known care needs before deciding.

How much does a Cavapoo cost to keep in Singapore?

The stored planning assumption is S$4,100 a year for food, grooming and routine veterinary care. It is not a verified typical cost for this breed. Replace it with current quotes and your own usage; add setup, licensing, insurance if chosen, boarding and emergency savings separately.
