Also known as Sheep-A-Poo, Sheepapoo, Sheepoodle, OES Poodle cross.

The Sheepadoodle is the cross between an Old English Sheepdog and a Standard Poodle, producing one of the most visually distinctive doodles: the black-and-white "panda" coat that appears in most litters. It is a breed for experienced owners who understand both the herding instinct and the extreme grooming demands.

Can a Sheepadoodle live in an HDB flat?

NoNot on the HDB approved-breed list

Not on HDB's approved small-breed list, so it cannot be kept in a flat under the standard rules.

Editorial climate-care note

1/5 (unvalidated editorial estimate)

Heat tolerance rated 1 out of 5. The Old English Sheepdog was bred for cold British uplands and carries one of the heaviest, most insulating coats in the canine world. That insulating quality does not disappear in the Poodle cross. Singapore's tropical conditions are at the extreme lower end of what this breed can tolerate safely. Mandatory requirements include exercise only before 8 a.m. and after 7 p.m., air-conditioned rest all day, a very short professional clip year-round, and close monitoring for overheating.

This score is not a safe temperature or exercise limit. Any dog can develop heatstroke.

Plan activity around your dog, not a timer

A breed score cannot tell you how many minutes are safe today. Avoid hot conditions, watch your dog's breathing, and agree an activity plan with your vet.

The Sheepadoodle is an Old English Sheepdog crossed with a Standard Poodle, and it is the least suitable doodle for Singapore by a comfortable margin. Heat tolerance is rated 1 out of 5, the lowest we give. It reaches 27 to 40 kg. Grooming runs about S$2,400 a year, the highest grooming line on this site. And it cannot legally live in an HDB flat.

None of that makes it a bad dog. It is clever, affectionate and genuinely good with children. But this is the page where an honest guide has to lead with the constraints, because they are the part the marketing photographs leave out.

Personality and temperament

Trainability is rated 4 out of 5, and both parent breeds contribute working intelligence: the Poodle is a gundog and the Old English Sheepdog is a pastoral breed. The result is a dog that wants instructions and a job.

It is rated good with children and good with other dogs, and the temperament is generally soft and family-oriented. Barking is rated 3 out of 5, moderate.

Energy is rated 4 out of 5, and beginner friendliness is rated low. That combination is the honest signal. This is a large, athletic, intelligent animal, and a Sheepadoodle that is under-exercised and under-occupied does not sulk quietly. It finds a project, and a 35 kg dog's projects are expensive.

Some individuals inherit the Old English Sheepdog's herding instinct, which can show up as circling or nudging children. It is manageable with early training and worth knowing about in advance.

Exercise in Singapore's climate

Heat tolerance rated 1 out of 5 is the number that should shape your decision. The Old English Sheepdog carries one of the heaviest, most insulating coats in dogs, developed for cold British uplands, and even crossed with a Poodle the result is a dense coat on a large body.

Against Singapore's daily maximum of 31 to 33 degrees Celsius with average relative humidity around 82% year round (Meteorological Service Singapore), a dog this size with this coat has very little capacity to shed heat and no cool season to recover in.

An adult needs an hour or more of real exercise, and every minute of it belongs before 7am or after 9pm. Keep it moderate even then and watch the dog rather than the clock.

Swimming is the single best thing you can do for this cross here. Poodle ancestry means most take to water readily, and it is the only way to give a large athletic dog hard exercise in this climate without overheating it. Dry the coat and especially the ears thoroughly afterwards.

Air-conditioning for the middle of the day is a genuine requirement rather than a comfort, and it is a real running cost that nobody includes in the purchase price.

Learn the early signs of overheating and act on the first: breathing that does not settle when you stop, a dog lagging or lying down, a wide dark tongue, stumbling. Cool with water and get to a vet. Do not use ice water.

Coat and grooming in the humidity

Shedding is rated 1 out of 5 and grooming needs 5 out of 5, at about S$2,400 a year, the highest grooming figure on this site. That is the trade stated as plainly as it can be: you are not avoiding hair, you are buying a standing appointment on a very large dog.

A professional groom every six to eight weeks, and brushing and combing to the skin several times a week in between. A curly or wavy coat on a 35 kg frame is a lot of surface area, and it mats from the base outward, so the dog can look presentable and be felted underneath. Matting in 82% humidity holds moisture against skin, and hot spots are on this page's health-issue list precisely because of that chain.

Keep the clip short all year. There is no season here that rewards length, a shorter coat dries far faster after swimming and rain, and the dog is more comfortable. Be realistic about the logistics too: drying a large curly dog properly takes time, several times a week, and it is the step people skip.

A badly matted coat has one humane outcome at the groomer, which is to shave it off and start again, so the brushing at home is not tidiness, it is what prevents that.

Diet and feeding

Food runs about S$2,200 a year for a dog of this size. Two things matter more than brand.

Growth rate first. Joint mobility leads this page's health-issue list, and a large-breed puppy grown quickly is more likely to have joint problems later. Use a large-breed puppy formula, follow the feeding guide rather than the dog's enthusiasm, and keep a growing Sheepadoodle visibly lean. A nine-month-old that looks slightly gangly is being raised correctly.

Then bloat, the standard precaution for any deep-chested large dog: two or three smaller meals rather than one large one, a slow feeder if the dog inhales, and no hard exercise in the hour either side of eating.

Keep the adult lean too. On a dog with 1 out of 5 heat tolerance, every extra kilogram is more mass to cool through a system that has no margin.

Training

An intelligent large dog trains easily and becomes a problem fast if it does not. Priorities:

Health

There is no kennel club health screening scheme for a Sheepadoodle, because it is not a breed. No governing body publishes recommended tests for it and no Breed Watch category applies. What exists, and what you should demand, are the two parent breeds' schemes applied to the actual parents of your actual puppy.

For the Old English Sheepdog, the UK Kennel Club recommends hip testing using the BVA/KC Hip Dysplasia Scheme, elbow testing using the BVA/KC Elbow Dysplasia Scheme, eye testing using the BVA/KC/ISDS Eye Scheme, and a DNA test for primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD). It also records a test recognised in July 2026 for a multiocular condition. The Old English Sheepdog sits in Breed Watch Category 2, and the Kennel Club notes the breed can be affected by conformational concerns.

For the Standard Poodle, the recommendations are hip testing using the BVA/KC Hip Dysplasia Scheme, eye testing using the BVA/KC/ISDS Eye Scheme, and a DNA test for von Willebrand disease (vWD1). The Standard Poodle sits in Breed Watch Category 1.

So the ask is concrete: hip scores for both parents, elbow scores for the Old English Sheepdog parent, current eye certificates for both, the PCD DNA result, and the von Willebrand result. Documents with the dogs' names on them, matching the dogs in front of you. "Health tested" is a phrase, not a result.

Beyond screening, this page lists joint mobility, eye conditions, ear infections and hot spots. The last two are climate-driven and largely preventable, and they are the ones you will actually deal with: drop ears plus a dense coat plus this humidity is the standing recipe for recurrent ear infections, so check and dry the ears weekly and after every swim.

Routine veterinary care runs about S$2,000 a year before anything goes wrong. Insure early, before an ear or skin note is on record to be excluded. None of this replaces your own vet's assessment of your own dog.

Housing and space in Singapore

HDB permits a cross of any two breeds that both appear on its published list of 61 named breeds. The Poodle appears on that list in its Toy and Miniature sizes only, and the Old English Sheepdog does not appear at all, so a Sheepadoodle does not qualify for a flat on either count.

That means a condominium that permits a dog of 27 to 40 kg, or landed property. Read the management corporation by-laws before you pay a deposit rather than after, because many condos cap weight well below this breed's range.

Ownership limits come from AVS rather than HDB. Under AVS's rules, an HDB flat may keep a maximum of one dog of an approved small breed plus up to two cats, and no dog on the Specified dogs list; private property may keep up to three cats or dogs in combination. Every dog needs an AVS licence. Licence fees depend on sterilisation status, age and the number of pets. One-time and three-year licences are different options. Check the current AVS fee table before paying.

Beyond permission, plan for cooling through the middle of every day and for somewhere practical to wash and dry a very large curly dog several times a week.

Care and cost in Singapore

On this page's figures: about S$2,200 a year for food, S$2,400 for grooming and S$2,000 for routine veterinary care. That is among the highest totals on this site, and the grooming line is a fixed recurring commitment that does not scale down in a tight month. A Sheepadoodle whose owner economises on grooming becomes a Sheepadoodle with a matted coat and a skin problem, which costs more. Run the ten-year picture with the cost calculator.

Getting a Sheepadoodle: buying and adoption

Ask for the AVS dog farm licence number, or the AVS import licence if the dog is coming from overseas, which many do. Then ask for the parent-breed documents named above, by name, and read them.

Ask which generation the puppy is and what both parents' coats feel like, because coat type varies considerably in a cross and it sets your grooming bill, your drying routine and how hard the dog works in the heat.

Ask about adult size honestly. Sheepadoodles are sold in "standard" and "mini" versions with no governing standard behind either label, and a buyer planning around 20 kg who receives 38 kg has a housing problem as well as a surprise.

Adoption is genuinely worth pursuing. Doodles come through SOSD, Causes for Animals and Mercylight, and the recurring surrender reasons for large doodles are exactly the three constraints at the top of this page: the dog grew bigger than expected, the grooming bill was not budgeted for, or the household moved somewhere the dog is not permitted. An adult arrives with its adult size, coat and temperament visible, which on a cross with this much variation is worth a great deal.

Life stages: puppy to senior

Puppy, to about 12 months. Grow slowly on large-breed puppy food and keep it lean. Start grooming handling in week ten, before the adult coat arrives. Teach loose-lead walking while you can still manage the dog physically. Set the cool-hours and air-conditioning routine now. Insurance in force early.

Adolescent, roughly 9 to 18 months. The coat changes from puppy fluff to the adult texture and mats appear in a way they did not before, exactly when owners are getting away with a light brush. Increase grooming now. Energy peaks, and so does the temptation to over-exercise a developing joint in the heat.

Adult, roughly 2 to 9 years. Steady state: the six to eight week groom, weekly ears, weight held, exercise in the dark, swimming wherever you can get it.

Senior, from about 9 years. Lifespan here is 12 to 15 years, and larger individuals tend toward the lower end. Move to twice-yearly vet visits. Watch for stiffness rising from the floor and reluctance on stairs. Ears do not improve with age. Older dogs tolerate heat even less, so shorten walks and lean harder on swimming. Keep grooming sessions shorter and more frequent as standing becomes tiring.

Three things to know

  1. Heat tolerance 1 out of 5 on a 40 kg dog

An Old English Sheepdog coat on a large frame in this climate has almost nowhere to shed heat. Exercise before 7am and after 9pm, swim wherever you can, and treat air-conditioning through the middle of the day as part of the cost of the breed.

  2. It cannot live in an HDB flat, on two counts

HDB permits a cross of two breeds from its list; the Poodle is on it in Toy and Miniature only, and the Old English Sheepdog is not on it at all. Check condo by-laws for a weight cap before any deposit.

  3. No Sheepadoodle health scheme exists, so demand the parents'

Hips, elbows, eyes and the PCD DNA test on the Old English Sheepdog side; hips, eyes and von Willebrand on the Standard Poodle side. Documents with names on them, not an assurance.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Sheepadoodle HDB-approved in Singapore?

No. The Sheepadoodle is not on the HDB approved-breed list, so under current rules it cannot be kept in an HDB flat. It may still suit private housing. Always check the latest HDB and AVS guidance.

Do Sheepadoodles bark a lot?

Our current barking assessment is: has a moderate bark (editorial estimate). It has not been independently validated. Ask about this dog's observed behaviour, triggers and time alone; the breed label cannot predict your neighbour's experience.

How much grooming does a Sheepadoodle need?

Our current grooming assessment is: needs a lot of grooming, including regular professional trims (editorial estimate). Confirm the individual coat-care routine and any professional grooming with the rescue, groomer or vet. The score is not a measured frequency or price.

How does a Sheepadoodle cope with Singapore's heat?

An editorial heat score cannot establish a safe temperature or walk duration for an individual dog. Activity, humidity, health, age and body shape matter. Avoid hot conditions, provide shade and water, and ask your vet about an appropriate activity plan.

Is a Sheepadoodle a good breed for a first-time owner?

Our household-fit note is: Editorial: may need more support. This is not a validated prediction. Assess the individual dog, your daily capacity, training support and known care needs before deciding.

How much does a Sheepadoodle cost to keep in Singapore?

The stored planning assumption is S$6,600 a year for food, grooming and routine veterinary care. It is not a verified typical cost for this breed. Replace it with current quotes and your own usage; add setup, licensing, insurance if chosen, boarding and emergency savings separately.

A Sheepadoodle in Singapore, the short version

Sheepadoodles have documented availability in Singapore, with AVS-licensed importers Dawgs and Co. and Wag A Tail listing UK and Australian imports. Prices typically range SGD 7,000 to 16,000. A Mini Sheepadoodle variant using a Miniature Poodle parent is also offered, smaller but still subject to the same heat rules. The breed is restricted to condo or landed property, and HDB does not currently list it among approved breeds for flats. With a heat tolerance of just 1 out of 5, plan exercise only before 8am or after 7pm, keep the coat very short year-round, and watch closely for overheating. Local vets commonly monitor for joint mobility, eye conditions, and hot spots. Rescue placements remain uncommon for this newer cross.
