  • More than 12 hours VCA assessment threshold without eating; seek help earlier for illness or vulnerable dogs
  • 1 missed meal VCA recommends assessment for a diabetic pet refusing food

A change in appetite deserves attention, even when your dog still plays or accepts treats. Stress or food preference can contribute, but dental pain, nausea and other illnesses may initially look similar. Record what your dog actually eats and when the change began. Do not label a sudden refusal as stubbornness or try to outwait a possible illness.

Why has my dog suddenly stopped eating?

Food changes, stress and feeding habits can affect appetite. They do not rule out illness, and a dog accepting chicken while refusing kibble may still have mouth pain or nausea. Check the food’s condition and note recent changes, then seek veterinary advice for a new or persistent reduction. Our picky-eating guide discusses feeding routines after medical concerns have been addressed.

When does a lost appetite mean illness?

Dental pain, nausea, digestive disease and illnesses affecting other organs can reduce appetite. Vomiting, diarrhoea, a painful abdomen, weakness or altered thirst increase concern, but their absence does not establish that the dog is well. Pancreatitis is one possible cause among many; a vet must distinguish it from obstruction and other conditions.

How long can a dog safely go without food?

There is no universal safe waiting period for a dog refusing food. VCA recommends assessment after more than 12 hours without eating and for a diabetic animal refusing even one meal. Contact your own vet sooner for puppies, a medically vulnerable dog or any accompanying pain, vomiting, weakness or reduced drinking. Collapse, a swollen painful abdomen, repeated unproductive retching or breathing difficulty needs emergency help. Do not wait for a clock threshold in an unwell dog.

How will the vet find the cause?

Tell the vet when your dog last ate normally, what they have accepted since, and any changes in thirst, stools, medication or behaviour. Examination may include the mouth, abdomen and hydration, followed by tests or imaging where needed. Ask the clinic what it can assess on site and whether specialist referral is necessary; licensing does not guarantee every investigation is available under one roof.

A dog’s appetite is useful health information. Track changes and seek timely advice rather than assuming a bright appearance rules out disease. A calm feeding routine can be useful after the cause has been assessed; it should not delay care.

Accepting treats does not rule out illness. A new refusal to eat deserves attention.

Common questions

How long can a dog go without eating before I worry?
There is no universal safe waiting period. VCA recommends assessment after more than 12 hours without eating, and for a diabetic pet refusing one meal. Call sooner for puppies, medical vulnerability or any other signs of illness; emergency signs should not wait.
Is my dog just being fussy or actually unwell?
You cannot reliably tell from brightness or willingness to eat treats alone. Mouth pain, nausea and other illness can resemble fussiness. Seek advice for a new or persistent change before trying to change feeding behaviour.
My dog will not eat but drinks water. Is that okay?
Drinking does not rule out illness. Note the amount and contact your vet about the food refusal, particularly for a puppy, a diabetic dog or a dog with other symptoms.
Could dental pain be why my dog will not eat?
Very possibly. Sore teeth or gums make chewing hurt, so a dog may go to the bowl then back away, or eat on one side. Bad breath, drooling or dropping food are clues, and a dental check is worth booking.
How do I stop my dog being a fussy eater?
First have a new or persistent appetite change assessed. If your dog is medically well, agree a consistent plan for measured meals and treats with your vet. Do not force-feed or use prolonged food withholding to test whether the dog will give in.
Does the heat put dogs off their food?
Heat can affect behaviour and appetite, but do not assume it explains a new refusal. Offer a cool resting place and water; distress, heavy panting, weakness or vomiting requires prompt veterinary advice.
